An unexpected delivery

To say I've been feeling under the weather for the last three months is a bit of an understatement!The fact is, I've been downright sick...
Candy hasn't even been on the menu!

Did I pick up a flu bug?

Or perhaps I just ate something I shouldn't have...

Well, the truth be told - the trouble started

here... then led to this....

Next thing you know we get a telegram from some giant bird....

We tried to keep him at bay - but to no avail!

Apparently, you can't outrun him either...

Let's hope he brings just ONE!
Should we be getting the chimney cleaned?
Hey - can I get one of those fully clothed babies who already know how to swim?
If only it were this easy...but with the price of postage these days it may be cheaper to do it the old fashioned way!

The road to Candy Heaven

I have been wanting to blog about my trip to Dylan's Candy Bar in NYC

but life has gotten in the way a bit. If the stairway to heaven looks like this - I may only make it up half way I have to admit - my pulse was racing and I found it really hard to concentrate in this store - just so many beautiful candy colors, bright wrappers and amazing displays. I did bring home a limited edition of the CandyLand board game - and one of these pretty paddle lollipops.

You would have to be a total "dum dum" to attempt to finish that pop in one go!

Bath time anyone? This looks just like my bathtub, only not as many gumballs as I am used to .

I think Dylan's Candy Bar had some of the best cotton candy I have ever tasted, and the BEST selection of lollipops I have ever seen.

- no Cadbury products that I could find however, which was strange, seriously...how can you have a candy store with no Crunchie bars?

BUT - the excellent selection of bulk candies and gummies went a long way towards making up for that.

On a recent Girlie trip to NYC I wandered by some pretty amazing window displays.

Nothing, however, could top this display from Louis Vuitton

Each piece was enclosed in a custom LV. bell jar - and tagged with a latin species name - as if they were botany samples.

Crone update

My muse is a fickle mistress... well, ok - perhaps my muse is just a might cranky!

It's no wonder, I keep throwing more and more projects her way.

Sometimes an idea is so strong that the art piece practically makes itself, other times not so much.

The Cranky Crone is there, in my mind, kind of grumbling around in the back - amongst the dusty debris. I know that eventually she will waddle up to the forefront, its just a matter of time.

Meanwhile, I have been collecting ideas and supplies;

An old Edwardian jacket - too ripped and torn to be worn

A vintage Halloween costume, not sure if I will use the whole thing

or just that yummy Green ruffle.

Ok - so the crone has her shoes picked out - isn't that the most important thing?

The beginnings of a face. Can't tell if that is a grimace or a smile... or a bit of both.

I have also been sketching, Madame Crone is to have a backdrop.

I just received a package in the mail - a few goodies that I have been coveting from my friend and one of my favorite artists

Isn't he adorable - I saw him at Christmas and have wanted him ever since!

I just love the way Lori fashions the little arms and legs on these guys, and his funny bobblely head and body - soooo cute. I will also be adding these lanterns to my collection - they come in all sorts of colors and designs. These three complete my collection... at least until more are created (hee hee)

each one comes with a wire hanger and lights up with a battery votive.

Lori has such a distinctive style, the signature Retro Rudolph's eye and mouth inserts are always a dead giveaway.

Month One - Crone Inspiration

Month One: Sharing a little Inspiration

Since the first part of this challenge is to share ideas, inspiration and thoughts about the Crone we plan to create, I thought I would do a little bit of background reading...

...The Dictionary defines CRONE as a "withered old woman", other sources describe Crones as "stock characters in folklore and fairytale, an old woman who is usually disagreeable, malicious, or sinister in manner, often with magical or supernatural associations...."

Flipping through fairytale books I found dozens of Cranky Crones - in each case the Crone in question was portrayed as wicked, hideous, and in almost every case, these Crones ended up meeting very gruesome ends.

Web images for Crones are also pretty harsh - ranging from ugly old ladies to downright wicked looking witches.

After researching a bit further, I have determined that Crones throughout history and literature have been totally misunderstood!

Most Famous Crones simply seem to be suffering from some pretty basic human emotions;
jealousy, resentment, anger...Couple that with low self-esteem due to withered and bent physical appearance, isolated and lonely living conditions, and being treated like a pariah by the rest of the Village - is it any wonder these ladies lash out?

For my challenge piece I am going to attempt to pay homage to one of the most famous Crones in Fairytale history.

She is cranky, to be sure, but I think she has her reasons

and on some levels I really sympathise with her...

This years' Birthday has left me wondering where the years have flown
And the thought of more housework is making me moan,
I'm beginning to feel a bit like a
CRANKY CRONE

So worn and weary - right down to the bone,
Yes, I really am becoming a
CRANKY CRONE!

I need a new challenge to pique my interest.
Something creative - difficult to resist...

Time to create a CRONE of my own, something made.... for me alone.

A CRANKY CRONE - someone that I'd admire,
is sure to light my creative fire.

This CRONE will be three months in the making
January's for innovation and painting.

Although I am just posting pics now - I have had my decorating up for a while -We have been in the Christmas mood all month and I can't believe that the big day is almost here!

I would like to wish everyone a

Happy Holiday

filled with family, prezzies, and good things to eat,

Christmas cheer, and relaxations and all things good!!

I took a bit of a break from my work for the last two weeks, giving me time to shop, decorate, and enjoy the season with my family

(and nursing the babies through colds).

the following pics reflect some of my Christmas projects/works in progress

Here is an animal tree that we placed on the mantel

(up out of the way of curious kiddies)

the animals are all hand-made circa 1920's - part of an ark set that is missing the bottom of the ark. I love the simplicity of these animals so I have kept the tree bare and topped with a rustic crown from Nancy's metal art.

I think next year I may add some pop-corn or seed garland and some rustic bead ornaments.

My girlfriend and I embarked on a Gnome hunt this year - both of us creating gnome trees for our homes. This is going to have to be a progressive tree because I still have tiny gnome cake toppers, Dresden gnomes and yellow mushrooms that didn't get finished. I also plan to add more woodland creatures and perhaps a woodland scene under glass.

Tune in next year to see more gnome ornaments, and perhaps a three foot toadstool that I have sketched out!

Pirate King is welcome to my house for Christmas

Celebrating a Birthday in December can be difficult,

it's easy to be overshadowed by the bling and bells of the Holiday Season!

Since my son's Birthday party falls on or around the 10th of December, I try to use that date as a deadline for having all of my Christmas decorating completed.

In the past I have coordinated our tree to match the theme or color scheme of

his party.

In this way the tree does double duty... one part Christmas tree...

...one part decoration for the party.

I have to admit, this year's theme was a bit daunting at first

Seriously - have you ever TRIED to find PIRATE items in the Christmas aisle .....not to mention the very fine line that this theme walks between being cute and tasteful and horribly trashy!

I do think I did a pretty good job of keeping it on the cute side - I must admit, finding three super cute pirate ornaments from Kim Hardt helped to inspire me.
A thrift store Ship graces the top of the four foot tree

Jewel tones reflect prettily against the wall

Bubble lights add a water element and the fun primary colors keep it youthful

Wooden crab and fish ornaments with glass gem ornaments for sparkle

I uncovered most of the "treasure" in my costume jewelry stash

The tree was set up on a small treasure chest for a bit of extra height.

Gems, pearls, gallons, jewels and gold chains spilled forth.

A miniature ships wheel is the finishing touch.

A wonderful Pirate king from Kim Hardt.........And his Pirate Queen! Only Kim can make a severed head look cute! The party was a success, and I did end up finishing a few more trees throughout the house, but the pirate tree has been the big hit and will stay up till the big day!

Kimberlee Edgar has been drizzling her studio with swashes of silk and garlands of sumptuous vintageness (is that even a word?) .
The lady has some serious skills in the decor dept, it doesn't hurt that she has a full stock of vintage antiques and ephemera at her glitter flecked fingertips.

Kimberlee is adding a few of my sweet creations to her delightful diorama.
I am honored that my work is to be tucked in amongst these beautiful treasures.

20 odd days till Halloween and Vine, and just a few more till the Spookytime Jingles Soiree .... and I have a ton of work still to do!

Currently, my house looks like someone dumped HUGE bags of half-eaten Halloween Candy everywhere!

Here are some wip pics - some are blurry and I left them that way because blurry is how I am feeling right now... thank goodness for caffeine and candy - my two favorite Cs!Is it just me, or does this pear look as if he is afraid I won't finish him?

Two great reasons to travel... one will take you WEST... the other... EAST!

I am so excited to be participating in the Halloween and Vine Folk Art show this year. The show has been running for 15 years, it's a fantastic show that is filled to bursting with Halloween Holiday Magic, and if that's not enough, the show takes place in Petaluma which is near the WEST coast in Northern California !

If you are planning on attending this excellent show, make sure to allow yourself a couple of extra days for sight-seeing and shopping. This area of the country offers some top notch shopping and dining...Here are a few of my favorite stops when I visit this part of Northern California:
The town of Sonoma is just a short drive from Petaluma, Sonoma has an adorable town square which is surrounded by fantastic restaurants and great stores and boutiques. Make sure to visit the Vella Cheese Company, an original creamery that makes some of THE BEST cheese ever!
My favorite is the Mezzo Secco, a partially dry jack cheese... and yes.. they sell whole wheels - it's that good!
The famous Napa Valley is also just a short drive from Petaluma - a beautiful drive through wine country will lead you past dozens of fabulous wineries - all of which are open for tastings and shopping. My favorite stop in Napa is the Prager Port Works - sort of tucked away and unassuming, this winery produces wonderful ports.My favorite is the Noble Companion - a lovely tawny port that makes an excellent gift or bottle for a special occasion.
The town of Santa Rosa is right down the road from Petaluma. I recommend a stop at the Charles Schulz Museum. The museum provides wonderful insight into the life and career of this famous cartoonist and an opportunity to see many of the original Charlie Brown cartoons. There is a great gift shop too - where you can pickup hard to find snoopy softies.

Of course it goes without saying that the city of San Francisco is worth visiting -two of my must-go to stops: the Fog City news stand - with over 200 chocolate bars from around the world you won't be leaving with just a newspaper!
And Cocoa Bella - a divine chocolate shop that displays chocolates by country of origin - a feast for the eyes and the taste buds!

If all that isn't enough... there is an Antique Flea Market in Petaluma on the Sunday after the show - so many great things to see and do.... so little time. More information on Halloween and Vine, Lodging and sight-seeing at Halloween and Vine.com

If Northern California is a bit out of your way - perhaps a show back EAST would be more convenient. I am so excited to be a part of the first ever, Spookytime Jingles Soiree, a show that combines the magic of Halloween with the Spirit of Christmas.

This will be my first time in this part of the country, but I have already done a little bit of research and am excited to learn that Titusville NJ is right, smack dab in the middle of Antique Heaven! Mercer County offers tons of Historical sites, high-quality shopping, antiquing and wonderful dining. Bucks County is right next door and also offers a plethora of antiquing opportunities.

The Spookytime Jingles Soiree will offer a delightful mix of both Halloween and Christmas Art Collectibles. Spookytime Jingles is also offering a unique opportunity to meet with the artists and preview the sales floor the night before the show. More details about the meet and greet are on the Spookytime Jingles Soiree website. I think the unique mix of Halloween and Christmas will provide an excellent shopping opportunity - not only do you get to snatch up some great Halloween collectibles, but you can also get a jump start on your Christmas Shopping!

I also have a little sum'n sum'n planned for September...shhhhh...its a secret but I will give you a hint... it does involve sugar, lots and lots of sugar!

Oh, and in case your are wondering... yes, I do bring my own candy on vacation.

Halloween Carnival Wheel

Spin the wheel

After a run of pizza nights here at the Sweet B Ranch, I am feeling as if my little family deserves a real, home-cooked meal.
I usually let my local farmer's market dictate the evenings meal - whatever produce is fresh and in season will end up in our main course.
Since I haven't been to the market in a few days, however, my cupboards are bare.....

...and unfortunately, so is my garden.
The pumpkin plants are coming along nicely - but it will be a while before spiced organic pumpkin soup is on the menu.... The corn is growing taller every day - but narry an ear to be seen so far.
This lack of ingredients calls for some culinary creativity.

A home-baked pie can make a wonderful meal, served with a crisp green salad --heaven.

Betty Crocker always has the best pie crust recipes.

I keep my pie-crust ingredients in the freezer to prevent the dough from getting tough.

It is important to take your time when baking a pie, but also to make sure all of the ingredients stay chilled right up untill the finished pie is ready to bake. Since my Pantry always has a few standard staples on hand I find that I can easily substitute the fresh pumpkin and corn.

when filling your crust always let the ingredients settle loosely, this will promote the melding of flavors as the pie bakes.

It is also important to "eat from the rainbow" - Brightly colored foods offer an abundance of vitamins and minerals I like to toss in a little bit of "extra" color - just for fun.

If the color Green indicates high levels of vitamins in food, then the color blue must be REALLY good for you!

Once your top crust is in place, gently brush with beaten egg.

We only use whole, unprocessed or peeled foods at the Sweet b Ranch!

Into the oven at 350 degreesThe crust turned perfectly.....

Ooops - looks as if my husband and the kids have gone to bed, never mind.... we can have it for breakfast! there really is no better way to start your day than with a piece of pie and a diet coke

I have been thinking about time lately.
Time seems to be going by so fast... it seems only yesterday we were bringing the baby home from the hospital, now his ONE year Birthday is next month.

... seems only yesterday I found out I was going to Halloween and Vine and the STJ Soiree, now it is just a few short months away.

So much to do ... so little time!

What's a girl to do in the face of such a dauntingly swift passage of time?

I used a really plush saffron colored fringe for this piece - and then detailed one side with vintage orange wool trim, the other with a fun grey/black trim.

A fun Carnival hoop toss game with a

Halloween Twist!

Skull Skill stands about 26" high, three dapper skulls are waiting to catch the rings that are tossed.

I used some fabric from an old (we're talking 1920's here) dress to sew the bow ties - and I also used the jet embellishments from the dress to add a tiny touch of sparkle to the ties.

On ebay at the same time is this JOL hoop toss game

Also standing about 26" high

I think it is fun that they are both functional as a game and decorative at the same time.

Some-bunny was good to me this year!

A very "Sweet" friend gave me this cool retro Easter Basket, filled with fun goodies she knew I would love!Prize of Place goes to the Wendy Addison bunny that was on the top of the basketBut my runner up "fave" was this giant candy stick from Hammond's Candies

Hammond's makes the best lollipops and Candy sticks - the colors are amazing and their lollies are chunky with an old fashioned flair. HELLO!! - how cute are these - candy sipping sticks, to be used as straws in iced tea (or soda)
And cocktail sipping/stirring sticks for the more sophisticated crowd. Just look at these cute pumpkin lollipops, they also make a red apple and green apple - just as adorable!

Ok (Len)- here is a lookie look at my piece for the March EHAG Emporium.
I was excited to finally get to use some wonderful Vintage Austrian Crystals that I have been hording for a while. The glass crystals look like polka-dots in this image - but they are actually multi-faceted and add a nice texture and sparkle without being garish.

This paper mache candy container is modeled after German Candy containers of the 1800's through the 1930's. Stores such as John Wanamaker in Philadelphia and Marshall Field's in Chicago imported German paper mache holiday pieces. Back in Germany the paper mache forms were often distributed amongst local families who finished them with paint, flocking, and even finely detailed clothing and accessories.

My little candy containter has been made in a primitive style, and is dressed in a little wool waistcoat and jacket. Millenery flowers flock at his feet.

My Family and I have been playing a fun little game we like to call

Pass the Flu.

Some of you may be familiar with this game; there are no rules, children seem to be really good at it ... and let me tell you ... being the "winner" is not all it's cracked up to be!

One "bonus" to pass the flu is that game participants get to stay up till the wee hours of the morning. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you might just see something like this.

I am usually a night owl - I didn't know Sunrise could be as beautiful as SunsetIs it just me...or do these clouds look like cotton candy?

There was a silver lining to these pretty pink puffs...... I have been invited to join the Artists at

Halloween and Vine

in Petaluma California.

This will be the Fifteenth year for the Show, which will be held on September 25th Wow! I had better get cracking!

Since I am still recovering from being the "winner" of our flu game , this months Candy Club will be postponed. Honestly, the only "candy" I have had over the past two weeks has been in the form of a ricola cough drop..oh yea.. and some lemon heads - they have vitamin C right?.

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to work I go..... But first a little sustenance! True fact.... I only have two fillings! no, really.... its true!

Back to work today - these Lollipop men graciously allowed me to photograph them without their "faces" - brave of them don't you think?

The funny thing is, he was actually licking it.. well ... slobbering it, and notice the perfect lollipop grip.

hmmmm - perhaps this is not his first taste of fake fruity goodness....

when asked how his brother got a hold of the lollipop, my first born replied " I don't like orange but the BABY likes orange"

- yes, well that explains nothing and everything.

It is such an honor to be invited to a Lollipop Luncheon, it is very rare that humans get to attend such a secretive event. The Lollipops seem excited, they are peeking out as us from around trees...

Candy Candy Everywhere

OK - so no candy of the month for December - that is to say - no candy of the month for the CLUB - I, on the other hand, have eaten PLENTY of this candy this month and am still up at midnight making more for gifts!

I am sure there are many others up at this late hour, fixing bows onto packages, preparing food for family gatherings and cleaning the house for company - this month really sneaks up on us doesn't it.

We decided to have a handmade Christmas - with a Pajama gift swap for the adults (not handmade - thankfully) - and you would think that this would have alleviated the stress BUT..... I always think up things that are bigger than life, and I have spent the last week finishing up multiple projects... painting, sewing, cutting, gluing and glittering all manner of gifty things.

I have also spent some serious time in the kitchen making honeycomb, penuche fudge, coconut layer bars, a cake for my sons 3rd birthday, gingerbread and spice cookies, chocolate dipped rice crispies for my husbands office and some really weird applesauce Cinnamon dough ornaments that did NOT meet expectations.

Well, I am looking forward to next year, but for now - I am going to stop the madness, slowdown and really enjoy this beautiful Christmas with my family - which is now a family of four for the first time ever!.

I wish everyone a very merry Christmas!

Each ornament has been made by a SpookyTime Jingle Artist.

I contributed the tree skirt, it is painted canvas with felt rosettes and candy faces sewn on - tons of pom pom and ric rac too! There is also one of my "Two faced" lollipop men in the tree - he is "Christmas Flavored" and is about 8" in diameter. You can just see him peeking out of the bottom of the tree - he's a bit shy, specially around all of these wonderful STJ creations!

I can hardly believe that one bidder will be getting this tree - it would take such a long time to collect all of the ornaments individually!

Hmmmm, which ornament is my favorite? Well, I love them all, BUT - the topper really stands out for me - he is so darned cute!

November Candy Club Challenge

Since fall is here, I have chosen a type of candy that will fit right into

your Harvest Cornucopia

This month the Candy Club Challenge is
FRUIT!

What's that you say? Fruit is not a candy!

well....Sweet B says it is....

For this month's challenge you have to eat, make,

buy for yourself (or your loved ones)

one of the following:

Candied fruit - Ahhhhh yes, it's fruit, so it should count as something good for you -BUT - it's drenched in sugar, so it's really baaaaad for you! I will be attempting to make candied sliced grapefruit and oranges THEN dipping them in chocolate - double points for me!~

Chocolate dipped fruit - easy to make - Oh so easy to eat! Try mixing peanut butter in with the chocolate before dipping bananas or strawberries!

Fruit jellies or any kind of candy made with fruit juice - aplets and cotlets are my personal favorites! As you may or may not know, I have my own classification system for Candy - Fruit Jellies fall under "Grandparent Candy" - but that's a discussion for another day.

Marzipan Fruits - An acquired taste- but one worth acquiring!

Halloween Mushroom Candy Containers on Pfatt MarketplaceMade with cotton batting and drizzled with mica glitter for sparkle, wouldn't these look cute at a Halloween placesetting.

Midnight Halloween Clock, also on Pfatt Marketplace. Inspired by a vintage Halloween Invitation, I have added my own "twist"; three dimensional features and a convex piece of vintage clock glass on the lid of this wooden box. Poem painted around the box reads;

"At twelve O'clock on Halloween, many strange things can be seen".

Box includes a mouse ornament for your Halloween Tree.

Zombie made Halloween Art

That's right.... Genuine Zombie art on Display!

I just listed these two Halloween Countdown Calendars on eBay.

Both are Acrylic on wood, and both have been framed with "reclaimed" silk screen frames

Each Calendar has 31 wooden disks, numbered on one side - Halloween images on the other.... Each day a disk is flipped to reveal a fun Halloween image!

Eggs and Eye Candy

We are finally back and have finished unloading the multitudes of baggage from our trip to the White Mountains.

(Toddlers and Babies require more baggage than Celine Dion!)

I think we stopped at every candy and fudge shop within a 50 mile radius of the town we stayed in, thrifted to our hearts content, and lazed on the porch of our rental cabin till our brains turned to mush.

There was plenty of help with the babies, so I return feeling rested and relaxed!

Just a few photo highlights of the trip.

Four pies in all, but two were consumed faster than I could photograph them

this one is rhubarb! - No lard -all butter, real scratch pie fillings.

Now, I can make a mean pie - and I do make pies for my husband quite often, but

Diane Lara, owner and chef at America's Pie Company has

the touch of an angel!

Her pies are so light and fluffy, so flaky and delicious

- they could just float right up to heaven

( if they weren't always eaten first).

As I mentioned, plenty of thrifting and boutique shopping too.

The Embellishment Boutique combines shabby antiques, sparkly jewelry, and scrapbook supplies in a wonderful way.

This store is PACKED with eye candy - I had to walk through it twice, just to take it in.

Vintage findings, linens, jems and an out standing scrapbook supply selection.

If ANYONE is visiting Lakeside- you have to stop by - you will love it!

Candy Road Trip Review

As you may or may not know, a road-trip is the perfect excuse to buy candy. I always pop into the gas stations we stop at, or check out the vending machines at the rest-stops to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings.

It seems like no-one criticises the calories when you are eating candy on the road, and sometimes you run across things you haven't tried in a while - or even things you haven't seen before.

This is a relatively new candy, (been out for a while - but still in the candy world considered "new") my husband and I picked up a bag on our way up to a cabin in the mountains last week. Released to coincide with the newest Transformers movie.
Actually I picked up a bag of these, a box of good 'n plenty, a bag of Reeses pieces (everyone knows peanut butter M&M's can't hold a candle to the Reeses!),some regular corn nuts and a bag of regular M&M's for good measure. Well, I love me some M&M's, so I was thrilled to see a new variation to try. (haven't tried any "new" M&M's since the premiums came out - and before that the raspberried ones of '07)

Unfortunately these guys failed the Sweet B Taste Test.

The biggest problem was that they had neither the shape nor texture of an M&M in any way. If you closed your eyes you would think you were eating something entirely different - M&M would be the farthest thing from your mind. They are bigger/fuller than a regular M&M and the outside didn't seem to be as crunchy as a regular M&M either. The filling is gooey (again -totally not M&M material) and tasted really artificial. I shared some with my husband and he agreed (and he will usually eat ANYTHING). Perhaps if I didn't know they were supposed to be peanut butter and strawberry - I wouldn't have minded the flavor...

we actually didn't finish the bag (Totally out of character for me!) - which is really saying something!

So don't waste your pocket money on these guys -go for the original M&M's - you know, the ones that "melt in your mouth...not in your hands!"

I think the Transformers should Transform back into regular M&M's

and stop messing around!
